The Reference Feature utilized in this application note is the ideal tool for reliable determination of desirable analyte characteristics in commercial beer using a non-targeted GC-TOFMS analytical approach.  The workflow here addresses the need to build brand awareness and so beer samples were collected with headspace solid-phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) and subsequently analyzed by GC-TOFMS.  Operational control and automation by LECO’s ChromaTOF brand software is highly beneficial due to built-in True Signal Deconvolution (TSD) that provides analysts with automated peak finding prior to applying “Reference” comparison strategies.  Applying such an un-targeted approach offers the ability to isolate and identify previously unknown individual analyte differences with ease.  At the same time, this workflow is readily transferrable to other analyte screening approaches for off-flavours or adulterants.
